New program at LRHS provides another path to earn a diploma

Logan-Rogersville High School was approved to begin a Missouri Options Program in January.

The Missouri Option Program was developed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as another path to earn a high school diploma.  Eligible students for this program are full-time, public school enrolled students who are at least 17 years of age and are at risk of dropping out or not graduating with their cohort group.  Graduation through the Missouri Option Program is not dependent on Carnegie credit attainment.  The Missouri Option Program is competency-based and approved by the State Board of Education.  The program utilizes a high school equivalency exam as content mastery for graduation purposes.  This exam sanctioned by the state for the Missouri Option Program is the HiSET test.  Missouri Option students that successfully pass this exam and complete specific program requirements are eligible to receive a standard high school diploma.  The Missouri Option Program is an effective means to retain students, lower drop-out rates, and improve college and career readiness.

The Pandemic has taken a toll on the graduation rate at Logan-Rogersville High School.  Before the March 2020 shut down, LR had been at or above the state graduation rate.  For the last two years, LR has been below the state average.  The Missouri Options Program was started to capture students that had academic ability but were struggling to get across the finish line.  In January, LRHS was approved to begin offering the Missouri Options Program.  The LRHS counselors began identifying students that had dropped out or were not on track to graduate with their class.

One student that had dropped out of school in December accepted the invitation to learn more about this new program.  He took the pre-assessments and it was determined that he was a strong candidate for Missouri Options.  We were notified this week by our alternative school educator that this student passed all four sections of the HiSET exam.

A student that was once disconnected from school, had given up hope, and dropped out has now earned a diploma.  He has now even expressed interest in walking at graduation with his class.  Missouri Options was the right program at the right moment for this student.
