Eligibility: Students are eligible for possible membership during their 4^th or 6^th semester if their GPA is 3.66 or higher on a 4 point scale and they have 95% or higher attendance. Students will not be asked to complete an application unless they meet these two criteria.

Criteria:

Scholarship: a cumulative grade point average of 3.66 or higher and 95% or higher attendance. 

Leadership: promotes school activities, upholds school ideals, contributes to the improvement of school civic life, exemplifies positive attitudes in others as well as themselves, and holds positions of responsibility in school activities and organizations.

Service: maintains a loyal school attitude even off campus, volunteers dependable service to the school and community in extracurricular activities (which do not include performances of any kind, playing a sport, or the simple act of being a member of another club/organization.) in a positive manner, and works well with others in accomplishing class, school, and outside of school service tasks.

Character: takes constructive criticism graciously, exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (the 12 Character Ed. words of the months), complies with school regulations, and makes smart choices and decisions in and out of school.

Selection Procedure:

As taken from the National Honor Society Handbook, “Selection of students for membership, however, is the responsibility of the local school through its faculty council.”

1. The selection procedure will be determined by the faculty council.
2. Students’ academic records will be reviewed to determine the first step in eligibility. (Just because a student makes good grades does not mean he/she will be admitted into NHS. This is not an honor roll.)
3. Students who are eligible scholastically will be notified in writing and will be given the Student Activity Information Form (application) to be completed by a specific date.
4. The Student Activity Information Form (application) will be reviewed by the faculty council, along with any other verifiable information about each candidate and his or her activities which define the candidate’s leadership, service, and character.
5. Selection: Candidates receiving a 75% or higher on the accumulated scoring sheets, will be asked to become a member of NHS.
6. Notification: All candidates, whether chosen for NHS or not, will be notified in writing. Students who are selected, and their parents, will be invited to the induction ceremony. All new members will be given the BY-LAWS of NHS and should hold true to the doctrine set before them.

Article I

Name and Purpose

      Section 1. The name of this chapter shall be the Logan-Rogersville Wildcat Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools, which appears on the chapter granted by the National Council of the National Honor Society, duly signed by the National Secretary.

      Section 2. The goal of this chapter shall be as follows: to create an enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in all students at Logan-Rogersville High School.

Article II

Membership Requirements

      Section 1. Membership in the chapter shall be based on scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

      Section 2. To be eligible for election to membership in this chapter, the candidate must:

1. Have been in attendance for a period equivalent to one semester in this school before his/her 4th or 6th semester.
2. Have the required cumulative grade point average of 3.66 on a 4 point scale and 95% or higher attendance. 
3. Receive an accumulated 75% or higher by the faculty council based on the applicant’s Student Activity Information Form.

      Section 3. A cumulative grade point average of 3.66 or higher, on a 4 point scale, is necessary for membership, regardless of grades students have earned in individual classes.

Article III

Membership Procedures

      Section 1. Selection of students for membership shall be held during the fall semester of each school year.

      Section 2. Any student who maintains the cumulative GPA of 3.66 or higher and 95% or higher attendance is eligible to fill out an application. Selection is completed through a faculty council, which consists of 5-8 members.

      Section 3. Upon passing scholastic requirements (see Article II, section 3), the nominee shall be given an application to help determine service, character, and leadership by the faculty council. The quality of answers for each section of the application will be used as election criteria by the faculty council. If sections are blank, the council will not be able to score it.

      Section 4. The election of members of this chapter of the National Honor Society shall be by a faculty council, consisting of one member from each of the following departments, to make five members: Math, History, Science, English, and Fine Arts or Practical Arts. If deemed necessary, more members, up to 8, from the faculty may sit on the council to help in the selection process. The chapter adviser and sponsor(s) shall work with the faculty council in selecting and dismissing members.

      Section 5. Those students elected by the faculty council for membership in the National Honor Society shall be promptly informed in writing of their election. Those who were not selected will also be informed in writing.

      Section 6. A formal induction ceremony for new members, and their parents, shall be held as soon as possible after the notification of election.

Article IV

Membership

      Section 1. A National Honor Society member must maintain the standards of the chapter in order to retain his or her membership. Any member who falls below the standards, which were the basis of his or her election, shall promptly be warned. If, during the next regular quarter of the school year, the member fails to meet the standards of the Society, his or her case shall be passed upon the faculty council. A member will be allowed only one warning period. Once a member is dismissed, he or she is never eligible for the National Honor Society.

      Section 2. Any member who misses one meeting within an academic year shall receive a warning, in writing, that shall remind them of their absence. Upon the second absence within an academic year, the member shall be put on a probation period equivalent to a quarter of the school year. Upon the third absence within an academic year, the member shall be dismissed; however, the member can make an appeal to the faculty council.

      Section 3. When a member is dismissed, he or she must be notified in writing, and his or her emblem, membership car, and certificate must then be returned to the advisor or principal. A notice of dismissal must be indicated on the annual report submitted to the national secretary at the end of the school year.

      Section 4. An active member of the National Honor Society who transfers to this school must be given a letter indicating the status of his or her membership and signed by the former principal unless otherwise stated on the legal transcript for the student.

      Section 5. Any active member of the National Honor Society who transfers to this school will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter. This transfer member must maintain the membership requirements for this chapter in order to maintain his or her membership. The transfer member should be informed of membership requirements immediately by his or her counselor.
