LR Art Teacher wins National Award for Master's Thesis

Aaron Roten

Mr. Roten has been teaching art courses at LRHS for over 23 years.  He pursued a Master’s degree in Art Education from Missouri State University so he would be able to bring dual credit college courses to our students.  In August 2019, Missouri State put his Master’s project on display.  His area of emphasis was Intaglio Printmaking.  The series is entitled, An invention for times like these: immersed in the cause.  It was very impressive work, not only for the depth of detail, but also for the social commentary conveyed in the prints.

Missouri State University encouraged Mr. Roten to submit his work for art education recognition several times.  Roten was reluctant but finally agreed this year to submit his Master’s Thesis to USSEA (United States Society for Education through Art) for review.  His thesis was selected as the 2022 national winner.  The official award presentation occurred at the National Art Educators Association (NAEA) National Conference on March 4, 2022, in New York City.  Mr. Roten joined in virtually from his classroom in Rogersville, Missouri.

Below is a descriptor of the USSEA Award won by Aaron Roten.

The USSEA Award for Outstanding Student Project/Master’s Thesis/Dissertation

The USSEA Outstanding Student Award is presented to a student whose creative project, thesis, or dissertation, reflects the mission of USSEA: to foster teamwork, collaboration, and communication among diverse constituencies in order to achieve a greater understanding of the social and cultural aspects of the arts and visual culture in education. The topic investigated in the master’s work promotes pluralistic perspectives, deepens human and cultural understanding, and/or builds respect for diverse learners.
