On March 2, 2023, LRHS Seniors were able to participate in College & Career Readiness Day.  Seniors spent time creating a plan for an off-site experience that would support their college and career goals.  Approved plans included job shadowing, college visits, attending registration or orientation events on college campuses, or working at an existing place of employment.  This extended learning opportunity was created to support seniors as they prepare to transition away from the K-12 school system.  

Senior, Eric Taras, got more than he bargained for during his experience.  He set up a job shadow opportunity with Troop D of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.  Eric was allowed to ride along with Trooper David Henly of Zone 2 for a 10-hour shift.  Eric arrived at the headquarters on east Kearney Street in Springfield at 6:30 AM. Most of the day was spent on routine highway traffic patrol.  Eric was able to observe the process of pulling over drivers exceeding the speed limit. The afternoon took an interesting turn when Eric learned the trooper he was with was going to attend an event with the Governor of Missouri. 

Governor Parson was in Springfield on March 2nd for a ceremonial signing of House Bill 14 which increases the funding for several departments and offices of state government. Troopers and other state employees showed up in support of this legislation. Eric used the opportunity to meet the Governor and explain that he was participating in the LRHS College & Career Readiness Day.  Eric asked if he could get a “selfie” to share with his principal.

Eric said, “It was a long day, but it was cool to see all the parts of the job.  The trooper told me I need to ride along during a night shift to see a totally different side of what they do.”
